Noortje Vlutters and Inge Bulthuis founded Back to Black in 2014 and began roasting their own beans the following year, building one of Amsterdam's few female led specialty roasteries around single origin lots and a willingness to experiment with unusual processing methods. This canal corner location near the Rijksmuseum runs walk in only, no reservations, with a genuine sustainability focus that extends to an in house SCA accredited training academy.

Oat and almond milk sit alongside the usual dairy, and the room takes on a different character depending on the day: weekday laptop seating is limited and weekends drop it entirely, keeping the tables free for people actually there for the coffee and the canal view outside.
